Liftinstituut as a international Notified Body, has to deal with the unseen risk in the “blackbox” PessRal.

PESSRAL (EN 81/prA1)

PESSRAL means: Programmable Electronic System in Safety Related Applications for Lifts

Until now safety related parts in lifts (according EN 81-1/2) were designed only with hardware components. The PESSRAL gives a good solution for safety related parts designed with software. This document is based on the document IEC 61508.
All electric safety devices mentioned in EN 81-1/2 are classified (SIL 1 to 3) according the risk analysis in the document IEC 61508-5. For lifts the lowest Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is 1 and the highest is 3 depending on the necessary level of safety required for that specific safety device.

In the PESSRAL you can find special tables concerning common measures for hardware design, software design and for the general process. There are also a few tables for additional measures depending on the chosen SIL class.

Electric Safety Devices are listed in Annex IV of the Lifts Directive, a conformity assessment procedure, e.g. EC type examination and production checks, must be done.

The presentation will be supported with practical cases.
